How a power cut alert SMS works

A power cut alert SMS system monitors a location and sends you a text message when mains electricity fails. It’s useful when you’re away from home, managing a remote property, or protecting equipment that must stay powered.

PowerNotify uses a small USB device connected to Wi-Fi. While power is present, it checks in with the cloud. If power goes out, the device loses power, the heartbeat stops, and after your chosen delay PowerNotify sends alerts — including an SMS to your selected phone numbers.

Why SMS is useful for power cut alerts

  • SMS is easy to notice quickly when you’re out.
  • You can add multiple recipients (family, neighbours, staff).
  • Ideal for fridges/freezers, aquariums, CCTV, comms racks and remote sites.

What triggers the SMS power cut alert?

A power cut alert is triggered when the device stops checking in for longer than your configured alert delay. The most common cause is a mains power cut (because the USB power source drops), but it can also happen if the local Wi-Fi or internet connection fails.

To reduce false alarms, most people set an alert delay of around 60–180 seconds. This filters out brief Wi-Fi drops, router reboots, or momentary interruptions.

Tip: use SMS + email together

Many customers enable email alerts (free) for a detailed record, and SMS alerts for the fastest “heads up”. If you’re protecting something critical, you can also add phone call alerts as a final escalation.

Where SMS power cut alerts are most popular

If you’re protecting anything that can be damaged by an outage, SMS alerts can give you time to act.

FAQ: power cut alert SMS

What is a power cut alert SMS?

It’s a text message notification that tells you power has failed at a location. PowerNotify sends a power cut alert by SMS after the device stops checking in and your configured alert delay has passed.

Can I choose how long before it alerts?

Yes. Set the alert delay in the portal (for example, 60–180 seconds) to reduce false alarms from short interruptions.

Does it need internet to send SMS alerts?

The device uses Wi-Fi and internet to report its heartbeat. During a power cut the device is offline, but the cloud can still send the SMS alert to your recipients when it detects the device has stopped checking in.

Are SMS alerts free?

Email alerts are free. SMS and phone calls use your portal wallet balance, and costs depend on the destination country.
